The difference between Ayurveda hospitality and wellness tourism is real.
It is also widely misunderstood.
0
The OJAS Ayurveda Hospitality Standard is a framework built to define that difference clearly. It was developed by OJAS to evaluate, represent and position authentic, physician-led Ayurveda destinations in the global wellness travel market.
If you are running a serious Ayurveda program, this framework was built with your work in mind.
1
Properties offering genuine physician-led Ayurveda are sharing space with experiences that use Ayurvedic terms without the clinical structure behind them. For serious properties, this creates a real positioning problem.
01
Travel professionals want to recommend authentic Ayurveda confidently. Without a clear framework, even well-intentioned advisors struggle to distinguish between a serious destination and a wellness resort with an Ayurvedic menu.

When the standard is clear, the right properties become easier to find, recommend and book. This framework gives the market a shared language for understanding what genuine Ayurveda hospitality actually requires.
03
Authentic Ayurveda hospitality requires two things working together
2- Hospitality Excellence
The environment, rhythm, nourishment and human care that support healing.
1- Clinical Ayurveda Integrity
The medical, diagnostic and therapeutic foundation of the experience.
When both are present and working together, the result is something the broader wellness market cannot replicate.
AYURVEDA
01
A qualified Ayurvedic physician should be central to the guest experience, not peripheral. The physician leads the clinical process, conducts intake, guides treatment decisions and remains available as the guest’s condition evolves.
Is the physician actively present and leading care, or only available on request?
Ayurveda begins with the individual. A meaningful program includes assessment of constitution, current imbalance, health history and present needs. A standard package applied uniformly to every guest is not Ayurvedic personalization.
Does each guest receive a distinct assessment and treatment plan?
02
Ayurvedic therapies are part of a larger clinical sequence, not isolated spa treatments. Where Panchakarma is offered, it should be approached as a structured therapeutic protocol with appropriate preparation, supervision and post-treatment guidance.
Are treatments sequenced according to Ayurvedic principles, or simply listed as menu options?
03
Ayurvedic treatments require more than massage skill. Therapists should be trained in classical technique and work under physician guidance, understanding not only how a treatment is performed but why it is being given.
How are therapists trained, supervised and supported?
04
The quality of oils, herbs and preparations matters. Classical Ayurvedic medicines and therapeutic materials should be sourced, prepared and used with care, transparency and alignment to each guest’s protocol.
Where do the oils, herbs and formulations come from, and who determines their use?
05
Ayurveda affects the body deeply. Safety must match the level of care being offered. This includes hygiene protocols, contraindication screening, emergency preparedness, consent processes and appropriate clinical documentation.
Does the property have safety systems appropriate to the treatments it provides?
06
HOSPITALITY
A meaningful Ayurveda program does not end at checkout. Guests should leave with clear guidance, appropriate recommendations and an understanding of how to continue supporting themselves at home.
Hospitality is the quality of attention one person gives another. In Ayurveda hospitality, service should feel warm, present, unhurried and respectful of the guest’s vulnerability during a healing process.
Ayurveda takes time. Short stays can introduce guests to Ayurvedic principles, but deeper therapeutic programs require sufficient duration, progression and continuity. The length of stay should match the outcome being promised.
Ayurveda is organized around rhythm. A guest’s daily structure should support treatment, digestion, rest, movement, reflection and integration. The schedule itself is part of the healing process.
In Ayurveda, food is medicine. Meals at a serious Ayurveda destination should be warm, fresh, seasonal and aligned with the guest’s individual needs whenever clinically appropriate. Healthy and beautifully plated is not the same thing.
The environment is not decorative. It is part of the treatment. Space, light, sound, air, materials, sustainable practices, cleanliness and access to nature all influence the nervous system and the guest’s ability to rest, receive and heal.
01
No. The OJAS Ayurveda Hospitality Standard is not a certification, accreditation or regulatory framework. It does not replace any governmental or medical credentialing process. It is a professional standard used by OJAS to evaluate, represent and position authentic Ayurveda destinations in the global wellness travel market.
02
OJAS works with a curated collection of properties. Representation is based on alignment with the standard across both domains. The Strategic Positioning Intensive is the starting point for properties that want to understand where they stand and how OJAS can support their market positioning.
03
We use it to evaluate potential partners, train travel professionals and position authentic Ayurveda destinations accurately in the global market. It is the foundation for how OJAS communicates the difference between serious Ayurveda hospitality and general wellness programming.
04
That is a conversation worth having. The framework is designed to support clarity and growth, not to disqualify properties that are doing serious work. The Strategic Positioning Intensive is a good place to start that conversation.
05
There are three steps.
1. Positioning
We start by understanding how your property is currently positioned in the market and where the gaps or opportunities are. This is the work of the Strategic Positioning Intensive.
2. Evaluation
We evaluate your property against the OJAS Ayurveda Hospitality Standard across both domains. This gives us and you a clear picture of where your program stands and how to communicate it accurately.
3. Representation
Properties that are aligned with the standard are represented by OJAS to the global wellness travel trade. This includes travel professionals, retreat leaders and hospitality partners who are actively looking for authentic Ayurveda destinations.
